Tips on Choosing a Good Domain Name

Your domain name is a big part of your website/brand/business. One of the first important steps to the launching of your website is choosing a good domain. If you can successfully pick the right one for your site, it can simply become a crowd puller! So finding an awesome domain name should be a key part of your web strategy and you must spend some time in choosing the right url of your new site. However, there are some potential pitfalls that come when choosing a domain. Here I am going to list some key properties of a good domain name that you should consider while choosing your own domain:

Basic Structure

A domain name can only contain letters (a-z), numerals (0-9) and dash/hyphen. You are not allowed to use any other special symbols or spaces in a domain name. You shouldn’t use hyphen at the start or end of your domain name. Choose a short name which is meaningful, easy to spell and hence easy to remember. Make sure that your domain name gives an awesome first impression to your potential customers as first impressions are always crucial. You are not allowed to use more than 253 characters. However, the actual number of characters in your domain name should be much less than 253 characters. Double check spelling mistakes while doing availability check of your domain name. You may also want to make a list of possible spelling mistakes, and register those extra domain names containing the possible spelling mistakes.

Domain Name Extension

The last part/level of the domain name (usually comes after the dot) such as .com or .org is called Top-Level Domain. Top-level domain name plays an important role when it comes to online branding and marketing. Most popular Top-level domain type is generic TLD. Generic TLDs (also called gTLD) include.com, .org, .net, .info etc. Next comes country code TLDs (also called ccTLD). Example of some country code TLD (ccTLD) include .us, .uk, .in, .fr or .nl etc. When available you should always pick out the .com version of your domain first. However, if are trying to target the local audience of any specific country, you may want to opt for ccTLD version of the domain. In addition, now you have the option to choose from thousands of other new gTLDs such as .doctor, .photography, .expert, .fun, .sexy etc.

Expired Domain Name

Sometimes a domain name holder may forget to renew his/her registered domain name or he/she may simply wants to discontinue the domain registration for some reason. This type of domain is called expired domain name. These domains are then hunted by domain resellers. It’s a good idea to purchase a good expired domain name from a domain reseller as this will help you get free traffic and exposure to start with. Private/Public Registration

ICANN publicly publishes the contact information that you submit during the domain registration unless you opt for private registration. The information then becomes available to anyone who does a whois search on the web. If you don’t want to receive different types of spam messages in your inbox or simply don’t want to let the world know about your contact information then private registration is the way to go.
